Positive reviews praised the film for generating a respectable amount of suspense, playful and energized enough to keep an audience guessing, an unexpectedly alert teen-scream disaster chiller, and Sawas performance, while negative reviews described the film as dramatically flat and aimed at the teen dating crowd. It received the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and Best Performance by a Younger Actor for Sawas performance. The films success spawned a media franchise, encompassing four additional installments, as well as a series of novels and comic books. When his death is ruled a suicide, Alex sneaks into the funeral home along with Clear to examine Tods corpse. As Alex and Clear are discussing their next move, the rest of the survivors arrive outside the caf, where Terry is killed by a speeding bus. Nevertheless, he is too late to save Ms. Lewton, whose house explodes after she is impaled by a falling kitchen knife. The remaining survivors reunite, and Alex explains the situation as they drive through town. Carter (who would be next, according to Alexs plan) is still enraged over Terrys death. When his seatbelt jams, Alex saves him just before the car is smashed by the oncoming train, but it flings shrapnel from the wreckage, decapitating Billy. Alex surmises from this that, because he intervened in Carters death, Death skipped to the next person in the original sequence. He rushes to her house to save her while being pursued by Weine and Schreck. ![]() ![]() While discussing their ordeal, Alex reveals his fear that their struggle is unfinished, since Death never skipped him after he saved Clear. When a bus hurls parking signage toward a neon sign, it descends towards him.
